The new library website is super! I really appreciate all that the committee members did to create this new site. I believe that patrons as well as staff members will find this much easier to use than our old site.

I especially like the colors and pictures used on the images of the children's site. They are very eye catching and easy for children to navigate through!

I browsed through the various sites and found information to be very accessible. I am glad that the footer is now being used instead of the drop down menus. The footer is much more user friendly. I love the calendars that are in various places which show what is going on each day at the library-- what a great tool! For history buffs like me, I enjoyed being able to readily find the information about the history of the library.

AWESOME JOB, Website Committee!!!

WOW! This is a phenomenal new database! I can see that this site will be very beneficial to many-- including myself! I would like to someday sign up for the "Fine Arts" program offered. They may have some new information and ideas about puppetry. Also I can see using this site to help patrons who have questions about homeschooling. I could refer them to this database and then point out the "Parenting and Family" section as well as the "Teacher Tools" section. Both offer help for homeschool parents. These sites would also be helpful to any parent looking for suggestions about parenting in general. There are sections called "Behavior Management" and "Learning Disabilities" which may be very beneficial for some parents.

I finished doing the task and taking the test yesterday. I did not find the process of doing this task easy. For some reason when I would try to go to certain pages, it would come up with the words, "You have already used translator on this page." But it would not show me the translated page I was looking for. Perhaps there is a "glitch" somewhere in the system, or perhaps I was missing something.

However, I found that using the Google translate is a wonderful tool. I could recommend it for almost any language!!

What a wonderful source of information patrons!! I thought it was very clear, precise and user friendly. I clicked onto 2005, Susuki, Grand Vitara because that is the kind of car I have. I had trouble a few years ago with the charging system of my vehicle so I went into Engine Electrical. Then I hit Charging System. Below that I hit Alternator and then Diagnosis & Testing. I then watched a video about how to install the new alternator and how to test it. The video would be very beneficial to patrons in that it showed the process step-by-step explaining exactly what needs to be done.

I have been working on Task #4 and went into Conusmer Reports in Masterfile Premier. I limited the publication dates to articles from November 2010 to June 2011. I reviewed an article called Bits & Bytes: Reading into eReaders. Wireless Week, Feb. 2011. In it is talked about the Nook and Kindles. The article wasn't all that informative and I am running out of time to check out another article, but I guess I would go with a Nook because of it's average price.

To down load a book to the Nook eReader I would:

Make sure the Nook is on and out of sleep mode before plugging it in to my computer.
Browse and check out the title I would like to download from the eBooks Library.
Click "Add to Book Bag"
Choose "Proceed to Check Out"

When I attempted to do this task at work, my computer would not allow me to listen to the video. So, I worked on it at home thinking that my speaker on my home computer would work. However, I still could not get the video to have audio for me. So, I just watched and read what was going on.

Then I worked on the rest of the task and came up with the answer for the first part of the task as:
"Best Phones and Plans"
in the Consumer Reports Jan 2011 Volumn 76 Issue 1 p. 26 - 29. I hope this is the correct answer.

Extra Credit:

One article from the first page of results from the 1/9/1992 issue of Rolling Stone magaizine was "Stones Take It To The Max."

I worked on Task #2 and completed it. I got 100% on the questions. At first the site would keep changing the answers for me. Why it did that I don't know. But, finally got it to accept the answers for the scavenger hunt.

"Cloud Computing"

I had never heard of "Cloud Computing" before and I found it very interesting. It is truly amazing how computers have revolutionized how we do things. I watched the "Cloud Computing in Plain English" video and found it to be quite helpful. I use Wikipedia so I guess I have been using "Cloud Computing" without knowing it. I read the article by Chris Peters called, "What is Cloud Computing and How will it Affect Libraries?" I liked his honest answer when he said, "I don't know and neither does anyone else." I guess I could see it being very useful for libraries to use it for OPAC, email, and possibly ILLs. I would have to be very assured that it is a safe -- secure way to go.

The Election LibGuide was very informative and easy to use. I think this site will be a big help to everyone who has questions about the election and the various issues. I took the quiz and got 100% on it and I downloaded and read the sample ballot.

August Task

I thought this webolution was terrific!! I LOVE history so Critical Past is right up my alley. I looked to see what was listed on my birth date and I found many interesting sites. One was "Jewish Orphans leave Weimar German in a train after World War II." What a powerful video to watch! This site brings history alive!! I also explored other dates and decades. One video I watched was about "Carmencita performs a solo Spanish dance in United States which dated from 1894!!! Critical Past is a TREASURE!!

The Food Safety site is also very valuable. The minimum cooking temp for fresh pork is 160 degrees F. I looked up an article dealing with eggs entitled "Shell Eggs from Farm to Table" which was very informative. There was another spot that had videos demonstrating different subjects of interest about safe food preparation such as "How to Pack a Lunch." I was happy to see a section dealing with safe food for pets!!

I have been experimenting with the new OPAC whenever I get the chance and I have noticed a few things. I have found that at times it is very slow which needs to be improved. I have also noticed that it can be confusing for people when it states, "Available in Library" versus when it states, "It's here." I think that these two statements need to be refined as they seem almost synonymous to me. For example, when I typed in the title for Goodnight Moon, an entry came up that it is "Available in library" but then when I looked further it said that the book was at Scenic Elementary. I know that some bugs will be worked out as time goes on.

A BIG THANK YOU for this one. I loved it!! This has been my favorite webution to date!! I like how we can find out what is going on anyplace in the world and I enjoyed seeing the various front pages of newspapers in the language of the people. I also thought it was great how you have access to some video of news from 40 years ago such as the event at Kent State!! My favorite aspect of all was that I was able to locate the Minneapolis Star Tribune from my home state of Minnesota. In it was news from the University of Minnesota, my alma mater. The article was headlined, "Here's a new class at the U: It's oil spill 101!" I will be able to keep very good track of what is going on in my home state using Newseum Museum.

The May Task-Free e- Books was very interesting. I was surprised at the large volume of books that are available on line!!

On Project Gutenberg, I schrolled down the lists of books by various authors and found various titles which might be of interest to me in the future. One book that sounded fantastic was a book by William Still. He wrote The Underground Railroad A Record of Facts Authentic Narratives and Letters..Hair Breath Escapes of the Slaves. Wow! That is a book I would love to read when I have more time.

Then I went to Google Books in which I was impressed that it even included magazines. I reviewed a book called London, Volumes 3-4. Another book was called Florence Nightingale... Notes on Nursing What is is and What is is not! written by Florence herself!!

On Many Books I found Kidnapped by Stevenson and found the whole exercise of great use especially when I have more time to explore it further.

The Optimal Resume exercise was amazing to me. I can see where it would be a big help to anyone applying for a job. The video interview is a fantastic way to connect with prospective employers. I can see where this would be especially helpful to those seeking employment far from where they live.

Hello Everyone,

I just completed the task posted on March 24 and found it to be very useful. I used printfriendly.com to print off information about the little Russian boy that was sent back to Russia. I can see where printfriendly.com will save work and paper. I often print off information or recipes from the internet for use on our parent handouts. Using printfriendly.com will be an easier way for me to accomplish that task.

Hello Everyone, I just finished the task for February and I think that this is all VERY useful information. I went into the complete list of learning centers and found the site for teachers. Then, in my research, I found on e-books, a book that is called the Basic Skills for Homeschooling. We often get homeschooled children in our center and parents looking for information. This will be useful for them! I also looked into the test for teachers called CBEST Mathematics Practice Test for Teachers. What a GREAT TOOL!!

Thanks gals for the great experience! I learned alot. I especially liked Task #13 where we learned about the sounds that can be downloaded. This will be a great site to incorporate into our puppet shows in the future. I also liked the task involving all of the government sites. I use the Mesa County Health Dept site almost every other day now to keep tract of when they will be giving the H1N1 vaccine to seniors so that Jim and I can hustle down and get our shot.

You gals did a great job of giving us a variety of sites and experiences. Thanks again!!

Hello Everyone,

I just finished task #22 and found it to be alot of fun. I especially liked the site Tastespotting. I -- like Cari -- love to see a photo of what I will be eating. I typed in "Diet" and many recipes came up. I hope to try the recipe called, "Flash in the Pan: I See Faux Chocolate in Your Future!" It sounds so yummy!

I also liked the site called Lifehacker. The entry called "Give Experience Gifts this Holiday" was a great suggestion. I can see where this site is loaded with useful information.

One of my favorite sites is the Weight Watcher site. It has many neat suggestions and tips on it.

Hi everyone,

I finished the first part of the task for #20. I have used the assessor's look-up several times before. Quite a while ago, Carol Eldridge showed me the site. I have used it to look up my house and several of the townhouses we have been thinking about purchasing. It is great to see how many owners there have been of the homes. I also love being able to see the aerial view of the homes. It is a great site with all of the home's information about taxes and structure, etc.
I also liked the state site for all of the information available to everyone. Te H1N1 vaccine information is invaluable. The birth and death records site is helpful for people as is the volunteer opportunities page. Especially helpful to me is the Senior Citizens information site. It is loaded with great information!!
For the 3rd part of the exercise I visited the Grand Junction site. It also was very impressive with the amount of data available. I went to the events and activities page and was surprised to see how much is going on around our town. Lots of plays, concerts and dancing!!

Well, I am again working on Task #18 and everything was going pretty smoothly for a while. I found a nice photo of a moose calf that I was going to use. I got it transfered into Zamzar and I was told that my file upload was complete. It "has successfully finished uploading." I went into my email and found some more information from Zamzar. Then when I went to open my file and I could not find my picture of the moose calf. I could see how this would be a great program, but I was not successful in getting my picture to show up.

I found "Library Professional Sites" to be a great informational tool. I especially liked visiting the "Library Success: A Best Practices Wiki." As I perused the site I came across the "Programs for Kids & Teens" section. It was interesting to read what another librarian is doing with Boys' and Girls' Summer Book Groups. I will keep my eye on this site for other good ideas to do with children.

Then I went into Resource Shelf and was surprised and impressed with the articles I found. They are very current and interesting. I liked the article on "Book Price Wars: Target joins Amazon.com & WalMart." Another interesting article was the "Searchable List: Fraudulent 2009 H1N1 Influenza Products from the F.D.A."

I think that clipmarks is a really great idea and what a time saver it could be. I did however have trouble with it both yesterday and today when I tried to work on it. I thought I was all signed up and then I went to experiment with it but could not find the paper clip. I went to a site on Google about Beethoven and I could not get it to work. So, I better not spend any more time on this one -- it doesn't seem to like me!!

I worked and worked at this task and kept getting to a page that would not let me view anything. So, I again solicited Carol's help. She is WONDERFUL!! She helped me get all set and I then experimented with the programs. I was very impressed with the word section. It is VERY similar to our MicrosoftWord. I think that this is very beneficial to have available to our patrons.

I just finished the first part of the task of downloading sounds. I love this information! There are so many sounds that I will be able to incorporate into the sound tracks we make for the puppet shows. The sound I downloaded was a group of children laughing. This will add to puppet shows as well as it could be a nice effect to add to a children's page on our website.

The second part the the task asked that we find a new artist. I went to the Last Fm and found an artist named Josh Woodward under the "country" genre. I listened to one of his songs and thought it was very well done. He writes and sings all of his own music and then has them available to download for free!
I then went into the Artist Server site and clicked on the "classical" genre. A new artist for me was a gal named Natasha Olson-Smith. She is from Denver and has studied music in Denver and Spain. She is a guitarist and plays beautifully!! She has several songs available to listen to including "Can't Help Falling in Love with You" with guitar and flute as well as "Vivaldi Concerto in D" with guitar and flute. She plays at weddings, give lessons and performs at Denver Broncos parties. I would LOVE to be able to take guitar lessons from her!!
I liked that site really well. It seemed like it was very easy to find information in.

Every so often a child asks if they can have a certain book in a series. This is a great tool to help find out that information. I have used NoveList often before. It is great! This time I typed in the Warriors series by Erin Hunter which is very popular with the tweens and teens. All of the books came up in order. Then I typed in John Erickson's Hank the Cowdog and came up with the list of his books in the series.

Under the Author Read A-Likes, I typed in one of my favorite authors Kathleen Woodiwiss and found several recommendations of books similar to hers.

When I typed under "Recommended Reads" I found that the different genres came up. I then went further into Biblical fiction. I found many suggestions of books I could read.

I also typed into the search bar, Civil War, since I love Civil War history and many books were listed for my enjoyment.

NoveList is a great tool and I use it often.

I found Task #11 very fascinating and informative. I loved the
Books to Movies site! I am very excited about seeing several of the movies when they come to the big screen. The movie "Shutter Island" based on the book by Dennis Lehane really sounds good! I am putting that book on my "Must Read List!"

When I visited the Book Report Network I loved the "Christian Living" site with all of the books listed. I am anxious to get and read the book entitled, "Hearing Jesus Speak Into Your Sorrow" by Nancy Guthrie. The book synopsis on each book is very helpful. I also thought that the "Kid's Read" site was exceptional.

I then went to Biography Resource Center and found information about one of my favorite authors, Dr. James Dobson. What I found interesting was the number of books he has written. I thought he had only about 10 or 12 books published, but he has had over 40 published!!

I just completed task #10 . I watched the 3 1/2 Min. EBSCO basic search tutorial and then I went to research tools. I typed the word "Electric Stove" into Consumer Reports. The first date limit I did was for Feb. 2008 - March 2009. 41 results came up. Then I went from August 2008- June 2009. There were 38 results for that date limitation. Finally, I entered the dates June 2009- September 2009 and only 5 results came up.

Next, I searched Biography Resource Center which was under General and I typed in one of my favorite singers, Amy Grant. I was very impressed with the Biography Resource Center. I read very detailed information about how Amy got her start in singing at the age of fifteen. The site also told about her accomplishments and awards. Personal information was provided as well as a photo of her. This is an EXCELLENT site!!

I searched for works licensed under CC. I first went into jamendo and got registered with them. Then I went to Flickr Images and found it to be very helpful. I often need pictures to use in story time kits with the children. Previously I have used Google Images exclusively. But I found that I can now have another avenue in which to get pictures. I compared Google Images and Flickr Images with the word "Scarecrow." I found that different pictures came up under each site. So, I will have a greater selection of images to browse in the future. I also like the slideshow feature of Flickr Images.

When I went to the Case Studies on CC I found that the artists David Byrne and Le Tigre are CC licensed.

Finishing up Taks #4

I didn't quite have enough time yesterday to finish up task #4 so I thought I would give it a try today. It was awesome!! One of my dear friends from South Dakota showed up on Facebook. Then I was able to see pictures of her along with her 6 granddaughters!! I wrote her a message on her wall!! I think she will really be surprised!! What fun!! What a great way to keep in touch.

To finish up on Task #7: I thought that the Boulder Public Library's Goodreads was okay. Not too many are on it but I could see where it would have alot of potential. I would be very interested in contributing to the content of a Mesa County Libraries' Goodreads account but I would have to have more training on it all.

I just finished task #7 and found that I liked the "Goodreads" post the best. So I signed up for that one. I liked the format better and I especially liked the quotes that I will have access to. One of my favorite writers is Sandra Brown and she has the quote on her page, "Its takes far less courage to cling to the past then it does to face the future." Isn't that cool?
I will definitely use this site in the future.

I just finished task #5 and I found that exploring the Ohio Library Council's tutorial was very fascinating and most helpful.

I found the section on "What's New"to be very informative and encouraging. It states that "libraries drew visits by more than half of Americans (53%) in the past year...! This challenges the assumption that libraries are losing relevance in the internet age." That's awesome!

I was very impressed when I further explored the site and found that in Ohio they also are encouraging parents and caregivers to examine and incorporate the six early literacy skills to help young children on the road to reading. The State Library of Ohio and the Ohio Library Council developed Ready to Read to help the youngest with their early literacy needs. That's just what we have been doing in Childrens' and many of the libraries of Colorado for the past few years!! It's great to know that other states are doing the same thing -- it is so important!!
I also retrieved a beautiful new chart of the Six Early Literacy Skills that they use in Ohio. We have a super chart but it will be nice to have a second chart for variety!!

On the Customer Service 123 site, I like how they used the letter "I" to stress how I won't keep cutomers satisfied if I am "indifferent, ill-informed, or inflexible not to mention, irritable, inimical, incomprehensible, or intolerent."! How true!!

I placed multiple holds using both methods and I can see where both methods would have their advantages depending on the circumstance. For patrons use at home I think that method #2 may be faster and easier for them. But, I prefer using the "request" icon on the right side of item, method #1 while at work.
It is great having the options available to the public.

I finished the second task.
I really love the Celtic Woman and so I typed them in. I like the feature that Pandora will bring up other artists that are similar. I was surprised at how many groups there are that sound very much like the Celtic Woman. One girl called, Hayley Westenra sounded terrific. I love the biographies that are also available.
There was also a Celtic group of male singers known as Dervish, I had never heard of before. Enya came up as well. They are fantastic!!
At a later time, I will see if there are any childrens' songs on there for future puppet show use.
